This past month, SLEO hosted its first ever Science Bowl Summer Boot Camp, teaching 17 kids between grades 5-8 about the competition, its rules, and the material it covers. The boot camp was led by instructors Ayden Huang (Ladue), Bryan Yang (Ladue), and Roy Zhu (John Burroughs) every Wednesday and Sunday, lasting an hour and a half.

Hosted by the US Department of Energy, the National Science Bowl is a fast paced, buzzer-style game where teams of four students will compete against each other. The material covered ranges from all fields of science, including biology, chemistry, earth science physics, energy, and math.

Throughout each day, students were taught general concepts that covered a broad spectrum of questions that might be asked, such as taxonomy, the atmosphere, or chemistry measurements. After, students would team up and simulate a real science bowl round, “buzzing” in answers like a real round.

After the success of the first session, SLEO is planning to host a second session, starting on July 20. The instructors hoped that Session II’s work would build off the general topics introduced in this past session, diving deeper into more advanced scientific topics.

By expanding SLEO to cover Science Bowl, the instructors hoped that students would be inspired and start their own teams at school. They’re also considering extending this branch of SLEO into the school year, possibly teaching at the St. Louis Modern Chinese School.
